Time4Time Community Exchange : Timebank Success Stories by Betsy Wallace, written for the March 2013 issue of the Shuttle, a monthly paper for members of Weavers Way Food Co-op in Mt Airy, Philadelphia.
Time 4 Time Community Exchange’s opening on April 7, 2013, is just around the corner! Time 4 Time (“T4T”) is an all-inclusive circle of people who share in giving and receiving services in exchange for time credits instead of money. T4T has the potential to help NW Philly residents get to know their neighbors, improve overall quality of life and help the unemployed as well as the socially excluded. It can help individual businesses and non-profits access and share resources, improving their effectiveness and outreach. Here are some stories about how individuals, families, community organizations and local businesses participate in timebanks.
Jerome, 14 years old, volunteers at a neighborhood center’s after-school program, tutoring younger children in math and reading. He uses his time credits to earn a computer through a computer donation program operated by a non-profit organization that is a timebank community partner. Jerome’s friend Tashika, volunteers at the Humane Society and serves in a food pantry (timebank community partners) to earn time credits for her computer.
Jane is a 70-year-old woman who earns time credits by mulching the rain gardens and cleaning the furniture at a local family community center, a non-profit organization that is a timebank community partner. Jane spends her time credits getting math tutoring from Mary and crochet lessons from Tony, and gets rides to her medical appointments through David, all timebank members.
The Smith family volunteers for a community project cleaning up the walking trails in a local community park and earn time credits for it. They use their time credits for childcare from Shirelle and yard work from Bob. They donate some of their time credits to fellow timebank member Charles, who is recuperating from surgery at home. Charles uses the time credits for help in getting groceries and obtaining prepared meals.
Sophie owns a beauty salon. She arranges to give 2 haircuts a month in exchange for time credits and uses the time credits to get help from timebank members Glenn and Rebecca with her marketing plan. She expands her clientele by getting timebank members into her salon and by improving her marketing abilities, something she couldn’t afford if she had to pay for it.
These are just a few examples of how T4T could make a BIG difference in this community. To learn more about T4T, come to the Time4Time information sessions on timebanking that are held in the Community Room at 555 Carpenter Lane every Wednesday from 7-8 PM until April 3. Time4Time Community Exchange Offers Weekly Info Sessions On Timebanking Beginning February 13, 2013 by Betsy Wallace, originally published in the February 2013 issue of the Shuttle, a monthly paper for members of Weavers Way Food Co-op in Mt Airy, Philadelphia.
Time4Time Community Exchange is sponsoring weekly information sessions on timebanking for Weavers Way members in the Community Room every Wednesday evening (7 pm – 8 pm) beginning on February 13 and continuing through April 3, 2013. Time4Time core team members will explain what timebanking is and how Time4Time will operate, addressing how we are collaborating with Weavers Way and how Weavers Way members can benefit.
In the December Shuttle, we talked about the origins of timebanking and the Five Core Principles underlying timebanking. Now we’ll get to the nuts and bolts. How does a timebank keep track of each member’s account? Timebanks USA, the national organization for member timebanks, created special software, called Community Weaver, which records member skills and time credits for each member. On Community Weaver, members can see the universe of skills offered by fellow Time4Time members and can choose what they need. When a member offers a service, s/he can record it in Community Weaver as Time Credit. Members will be able to see their own time credit accounts. For those of us who are not comfortable with a computer, never fear! Time4Time will also have a team of volunteer “computer buddies” (they get time credits for doing this work) who will provide personal assistance to any member who needs it.
Timebanks need a critical mass of members in order to create a robust circle of giving and receiving. Time4Time figures it needs at least 200 active members. Supporting the sense of community is paramount. As a Time4Time member, expect “get-to-know-you” potlucks and other events on important topics that will bring the community together. Time4Time will start member skill sharing on our launch date, April 7, 2013. The purpose of the launch on April 7, 2013, is for everyone to get to meet each other, sign up, and have fun.

Time4Time CommunIty Exchange, a timebank serving greater Northwest Philly, is an inclusive, community-wide circle of people who share skills for time credits instead of money. Time4Time’s core team, Betsy Wallace, Jackie Yorko, Bob Wenger, Meenal Raval, and Mickey Leone, are working hard behind the scenes to prepare for the grand opening on Sunday April 7, 2013. You may have visited the Time4Time table at the Mt. Airy Village Fair in September. On that day alone, about 60 people registered their interest in timebanking. Time4Time hopes to attract 150 people or more to sign up as members at the opening in April.
Timebanking is the brainchild of Edgar Cahn, the co-founder of the National Legal Services Program and of the Antioch School of Law. An international movement, timebanking promotes equality and builds caring community economies through inclusive exchange of time and talent. In Pennsylvania, there are 18 timebanks in addition to Time4Time Community Exchange, including Walnut Hill in West Philadelphia, Timebank Media, and Phoenixville Timebank. Timebank leaders work to strengthen and rebuild community; they use timebanks to achieve wide-ranging goals such as supporting social justice, building bridges between diverse communities, and fostering local ecological sustainability. The premise of sharing skills based on the time spent rather on the skill’s monetary value seems so simple, but when viewed more deeply, the idea offers new ways of thinking about time, wealth, and community. As with all timebanks, Time4Time Community Exchange is founded on five core principles:
- We are all assets ─ everyone has something to offer. No one knows or does everything and everyone knows and can do something.
- Some work is valuable beyond market price ─ and that work needs to be recognized and rewarded. Everyone benefits when we work toward raising healthy children, building strong families, revitalizing neighborhoods, living sustainably, and fostering social justice.
- Helping works best when everyone participates in helping and being helped— when neighbors join in a circle of giving and getting, we are all stronger. The community we create offers a greater reward than simply the sum of the work done.
- We need each other — alone, we are limited in what we can achieve. Networks are stronger. When we work together, we can build the world we envision.
- Every human being matters ─ there are no throwaway people. Everybody has something to offer and has unmet needs as well.
As you can see, we share many of the same values as Weavers Way Cooperative. We are currently working with Weavers Way to provide timebanking benefits to Weavers Way members who join up with Time4Time.
